Kelsey’s Favorite Fabric Types

As i’ve gotten more and more into diy projects and making our home feel like us. I’ve discovered fabrics that I love using again and again for my home decor and crafting projects. Spoonflower has a large selection of fabrics to choose from and can feel a little over whelming. When I first got into sewing again I ordered their fabric swatch kit that has a bunch (not all) of their fabrics. Im a visual and feel person so to be able to have these swatches in my home to feel and lift up to the light and test for my next project has been amazing!

Crafting and Quilting Fabrics

During the end of the year I start to think about what kind of gifts I could make that my family members would love. Recently for my oldest niece I sewed a quilted makeup bag and my baby sister got a quilted tote bag. This year was definitely heavy with quilted items. Whether you looked in store and online you were sure to find the quilting look on many items. Spoonflower has many options for quilting and craft fabrics but here are my top five.

  1. COTTON POPLIN

I love cotton poplin fabric. Compared to their petal signature cotton I like the soft feeling of the cotton poplin more. Its a smooth and crisp fabric so it holds shape really well without feeling rough to the touch.

  2. COTTON LAWN

When I want something more light weight and slightly sheer cotton lawn is normally the one im going to use. It is categorized for apparel but if you want a modern quilt with a super soft almost satin feeling cotton lawn would be perfect.

  3. PERENNIAL SATEEN GRAND

A very simulator feeling to cotton poplin. While designs printed on sateen come out slightly more true to color then on cotton poplin it is slightly thicker then poplin.

Home Decor and Upholstery Fabric

Im a homebody and love making and upcylcing pieces for our home. Making pillows, curtains and other home decor is a great way to add custom pieces to your home without breaking the bank.

  1. BELGIAN LINEN

This fabric is a dream on curtains and upholstery. Its drape is so good and its a nice thick fabric you can use for a lot of different projects.

  2. CYPRESS COTTON CANVAS

Its heavier weight fabric then Belgian Linen so if your looking for almost black out thickness for curtains. Cypress Cotton feels really nice and is a great option for thicker soft basketweave fabric.

  3. Performance Linen

While it doesn’t feel as thick as Belgian or Cypress but it does have the same opacity as Belgian Linen. It has the easy care of polyster but the look and feel of linen.

*Honorable mentions. Cotton Poplin and Perennial Sateen Grand are great for pillows and home decor. However, I wouldn’t use them for curtains or upholstery.
